This was the week that Beyonce dropped Cowboy Carter, her 8th Studio album. Upon first look at the cover art, I thought I was having Deja-Vu. Queen B is once again on top of a steed. Seriously? Doesn’t one of the wealthiest and most powerful women on earth have more props in her photo closet? But I digress. Let’s talk music.

VICTORIA MONET IS KILLING IT!

On the heels of winning a Best New Artist Grammy, and two others (that’s 3 Grammy Awards in one night), Victoria Monet continues to make noise on radio, the charts and everywhere else. A little noise in her life that she could do without, came from her young daughter on the Grammy red carpet. Victoria says she will not be bringing her daughter to another red carpet event for a few years. In the meantime, her daughter can still be seen with her in the studio while working on new music.

The calendar says Spring is still three weeks away, but the warm temps outside, along with hot new music inside, is giving me all the feels. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's iconic hit, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” has experienced a resurgence in popularity, thanks to its inclusion in the closing scenes of the acclaimed film, Saltburn. The song was originally released in 2001 as part of Ellis-Bextor’s debut album, “Read My Lips.” The track garnered significant attention upon its initial release, becoming the singer’s most successful song to date. BENSON BOONE - BEAUTIFUL THINGS

Shortly after Benson Boone scored his first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, with Beautiful Things, the song earned the top spot as the most added song at radio. You may remember Benson from Season 19 of American Idol. He dropped out of the show with no explanation, leaving everyone wondering. Then not long after he signed to Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds record label Night Street Records. Reynolds became his mentor after he left American Idol.

Usher is killing it on the airwaves and on the charts in his lead up to the big Super Bowl Halftime performance. Hit collabs with Jung Kook, Summer Walker, and 21 Savage have given him 2 big hits, currently working their way up the charts and into the ears of fans. It also begs the question…who will be joining him on stage at Super Bowl. Many of his biggest hits are collabs with other artists, so the stage could be filled with lots of talent.

Lot’s of heavyweight hitters are back with new music this week, and many of them are surrounded in controversy. J-Lo, Lil Nas X, and Ariana Grande all dropped new singles. As is always the question with Jennifer Lopez, will her relationship with Ben Affleck last this time around? Lil Nas X is raising eyebrows for the visuals in his video for his latest single, and it seems Ariana Grande lost over 400,000 followers on social media after her new single dropped days ago. Now 400k seems like an awful lot of people, and it is, but it won’t put a dent in her 380 million stalwart fans. So what is it about the lyrics of the song that pissed off so many people?

Congrats to my girl Billie Eilish and brother Finneas on their recent Golden Globe winning song.  The track “What Was I Made For” appears in the Barbie Movie Soundtrack. This weekend I’ve determined it was made for an HK Remix.

AJR BACK WITH AN HK REMIX

Brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan (AJR) are back In The Mix with an HK remix. The group is seeing early buzz on “Yes, I’m A Mess”. They’re also headlining their first ever arena tour, and in the middle of writing music for a new Broadway Show based on the classic children’s book…Harold and the Purple Crayon. Seeing as how AJR has made a career out of recording musical theater influenced albums, the collaboration seemed like a perfect fit.

 

Another perfect fit is all the music I’m working on for this week’s In The Mix With HK™. It’s the first show of the New Year and we’re kicking things off right. Get ready for Tate McRae’s back to back hits, Doja Cat is gonna Paint The Town Red, and Teddy Swims is gonna help all of us Loose Control. That and a whole lot MORE!
